What is Life for? It is for you!

You don’t have to take life the way it comes to you. You can design your life to come to you the way you want it.

Vagabonding is traveling the world on your own terms, but beyond travel, it is an outlook on Life. It is about using the prosperity and possibility of the information age to increase your personal knowledge and options instead of your personal possessions. It is about looking for adventure in normal life and normal life within adventure. Vagabonding is an attitude… a friendly interest in people, places, and things that makes someone an explorer in the truest, most vivid sense of the word. Vagabonding is not a lifestyle, nor is it a trend. It is just an uncommon way of looking at life.  A value adjustment from which action naturally follows. Most importantly it is about time, our real commodity, and how we choose to use it. Vagabonding has always been a private choice within a society that is constantly urging us to do otherwise.

My point in elaborating on the word Vagabonding, is to acknowledge and accept that not everyone that hears of my tale is going to be supportive or even be able to grasp my reasoning behind what I am doing and what I love. I am following my heart. It is the one thing I’ve always been good at. I have no idea where I’ll end up. I just know I’ll be smiling the whole way through.

A close friend of mine recently passed on a message to me that came from a family member of hers, basically telling her to warn/suggest to me that if I thought I knew what I was getting into that I had another thing coming…here are a few lines from the e-mail (I am amazed that she thinks she can visit 15-20 countries in several months or even one year, just 365 days and expect to enrich the lives of others through community connections and fulfillment. That’s about 12 to 18 days per country. It’ s hard to immerse yourself, for good or otherwise, or give a believable story to the locals, when you’re basically just passing through for a few days. If she wants to “do good” she should get connected with one of the  religious-based organizations

I have seen and talked to some world-travellers who were visiting India to seek exotic places, or to get to know themselves, or to find a good hash house in Kathmandu.  They wandered about rather aimlessly, seeming without any goal in life except to see the next mountain and seek pleasure.  It is very difficult to wander about the world alone without a legitimate connection or reason for being there. We learned a saying in Nordrhein-Westphalia that one had to eat a pound of salt together to develop a good relationship.  That implies a long time together to become friends.  Does she want to spend the time?)

It took me a step back when I first read this note…then I thought of one of my favorite quotes from Plato “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”  This is how I wander through everyday life… smiling, greeting, complimenting, interacting, helping complete strangers that I may only bump into for a few minutes, hours or days. I may never see them again, but that doesn’t matter to me. I feel connected to them, every connection is different, but I feel like I am doing my part to better the world.  I know not everyone operates on the same wavelength as me… I’ve known this my whole life, but I am OK with it. Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true souls will leave footprints in your heart forever.

That is what I plan to do, leave as many “footpints” as I can in the hearts of all of the people I meet along this journey. I may not have the best of luck in Love but I tell you what, I’m pretty darn good at brightening someone’s day and chipping in where I can and doing my part no matter how big or small to make this world a better place. Not many people believe that there is good inside of everyone, but I do!  SO even if I am only in each country for a few days, weeks or months I am still going to make a difference. I am still going to do do whatever I can, whenever I can for whoever I can. It may just be helping give medicing to children, feeding farm animals, repairing a run down home or school, building a well or just listening to someone’s troubles, whatever I end up doing I know that it doesn’t take years to build a bond with someone. I will share my light with the world & nobody is going to bring me down.

So for all of you dreamers out there, this is my heartfelt note to you:
Do what makes you Smile! Seek out art, music, work that resonates strongly within you and use it as a starting point. In time you may begin to develop your own style – your own vocabulary from which to build on.  Let your imagination run wild!  Walk with the dreamers, the believers, the courageous, the cheerful, the planners, the doers, the successful people with their heads in the clouds and their feet on the ground. Let their spirit light a fire within you to leave this world better than when you found it…Some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle, and end, but Life is about not knowing. It is about having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity…You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face… do the things you think you cannot do!

Life is what we make it

A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at them…This quote reminds me of how my life has played out so far. By taking a lesson and learning from each brick that is thrown I grow stronger everyday.

The company did not approve my time off, however I have received an overwhelming amount of hugs, smiles, well wishes and life advice from friends and co-workers cheering me on. Now the adventure can officially begin, along with taking care of all of the tiny details (financial planning, finalizing tickets, hosts, volunteering opportunities, etc.)
